KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian human rights activists and lawmakers on Thursday, February 22, blasted plans by the northern Terengganu state to use voluntary corps to provide tip-offs about couples engaged in inappropriate behavior.
"We call on the Terengganu government to call off its plan and to stop turning the people of Terengganu into spies of the state," Zaitun Kasim, the program manager of Sisters in Islam, a woman group championing gender rights, said in a statement cited Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Rosol Wahid, chairman of the state's Islam Hadhari and Welfare Committee, defended the measure.
He said the aim was to curb the rising number of couples committing "khalwat", close proximity between a man and a woman who are not married.
AT: Susah betul nak membenteras maksiat ni, kerana pendokong kebathilan menentang atas nama hak asasi manusia.

"They threatened me that if I did not cooperate they would use the tape and cause me a scandal," said the victim.
BAGHDAD — One Iraqi officer and three soldiers have confessed to raping a Sunni woman in northern Iraq, the second such sexual assault of Sunni women by Iraqi security forces this week.
"We received a complaint from the citizen... that a group of soldiers entered her house few days ago and raped her," Tal Afar Mayor Brigadier General Najim Abdullah Al-Jubari told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Thursday, February 22.
He said one of the five soldiers tried to stop his colleagues from raping the Iraqi woman.
"He wanted to stop his mates by threatening them with weapons because it is an immoral act, but the rape took place anyway."
Jubari said the troops – three soldiers and an officer – initially denied the charges but later confessed when the women identified them at an identity parade.
The victim, a 40-year-old married mother of 11 from Iraq's Turkoman minority, earlier appeared on the Doha-based Al-Jazeera television.
"They threatened me that if I did not cooperate they would use the tape and cause me a scandal."
When asked why she did not report the attack, she said: "Who do I complain to? No-one allows us to complain."
According to human rights groups, several Iraqi women fell victims for sexual abuse by both Iraqi and US forces, but most of the cases went unreported.
A US soldier was sentenced to life in prison in November 2006 for raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl and her father, mother and six-year-old sister.
(An-Nisa 4.75)
